Key Responsibilities

  • Working with product owners and engineering management to scope work
    and provide t-shirt sized LOEs
  • Leading a team of back end specialists across a range of high visibility projects
  • Improving the team’s code quality, metrics, and process
  • Designing and building high quality, functional components in the context of
    AWS backed microservices to meet business needs
  • Reviewing, refactoring, revising, extending, testing, and documenting new
    and existing code
  • Presenting the team’s technology and tools to the rest of the engineering
    organization
  • Contributing to think tank and brown bags as a software community leader
  • Contributing to projects during discovery, specification, and ticketing
  • Upholding and actively contributing to a culture of principled software
    development
  • Mentoring and pairing with junior developers
  • Performing investigations, bug squashing, performance optimizing, writing
    post mortems, participating in standups and retrospectives, etc
  • Regularly and thoroughly communicating with project stakeholders through
    a variety of tools (JIRA, Slack, Zoom, etc)

Desired Skills & Experience 

  • One of these:
    • BS in Computer Science (or related field) and a minimum of 8 years
      related experience developing web applications in a professional
      context
    • or advanced degree in Computer Science (or related field) with a
      minimum of 6 years related work experience;
    • or 9+ years equivalent work experience.
  •  Agile team leadership
  • Extensive experience with building web-based microservices using Ruby
    (Ruby on Rails) or Elixir (Phoenix)
  • Practical knowledge of and interest in:
    • AWS services and technologies
    • Data pipelines / streams
  • Fluency in:
    • Github
    • GraphQL
    • JSONAPI spec
    • Ruby/Rails or Elixir/Phoenix
    • SQL (PostgreSQL)
    • Microservice architecture
  •  Bonus points if you are conversant in the following:
    • Functional Programming
    • Swagger
    • Asynchronous messaging
    • Monolith decomposition
